You can usually tell what state a countries in by the state of its people.

Lets look at America

America is over-extended militarily; Americans are over-stressed

America consumes more than is good for it; Americans are becoming extremely obese

America likes to look down on other countries without any true grounds to do so; Americans like to think they help the world by posting stuff on the internet

America cares more for building bombs than schools; Americans put more stock by braun than by brain

This is all speaking generally of course, but its very interesting.
